Many physical and occupational therapy students at Rockhurst get the chance to volunteer in Ecuador each year. Rockhurst University teams up with the Damian House Foundation in Guayaquil, Ecuador to provide therapy to the people who are affected by Hansen's Disease. The Damien House Foundation provides care for 50 in-house patients and more than 150 outpatients. Hansen's disease also known as leprosy, is chronic and infectious. Some of the symptoms include nerve damage, skin lesions, weakened muscles, and bone deterioration. The PT and OT disciplines team up to provide group treatments focused on social participation and occupational engagement. Many services that are provided by Rockhurst students are for gross motor function, fine motor function, strength & conditioning, pain management, cognitive skills, occupational performance, and functional mobility. While the students are volunteering their services in Ecuador they get to experience the culture of the area. There is time set aside to go exploring and see many sites as well as try different types of food. This opportunity provides a great chance to learn about Hansen's disease, to travel, provide therapy services, and learn about the culture of Ecuador.
